exACTly! If you explain, it moves the genre from fantasy to science fiction! Leave it alone already.

For that matter, all of the Star Wars universe is Science Fantasy, with the spaceships and death stars and clone wars, but it also has the Force and the Jedi knights.
Which was all ruined the moment Qui Gonn said the word "midichlorians".

Yes, Dune is a mix of genres. The scifi is obvious - the interplanetary travel, the technology that was sanctioned by the Butlerian Jihad. But then there is the mental stuff, the abilities that cannot really be explained in strict scifi terms, but more in terms of us believing it (fantasy, really). Then the cultures of the interplanetary civilisation is almost medieval, or renaissance in style - not to mention the strong arabian influence of Dune itself.
A complete masterpiece (at least the first three novels).

When I think of Mixed Genres, I can't help but think of Blade Runner. It had that wild west feel and yet set in a sci/fi setting. Then there is Fifth Element, Taxi driver on steroids. I saw it as a comedy with a western feel, and it also had the element of fantasy; what with the evil planet thing coming to kill them and then there was the sci/fi element.
Dune for me fits this also. I saw it as a possible fantasy though it is touted as a sci/fi.
